Contextual Colour Project

In this exercise, I pixelated a photo, taken from my front door, to remove the detail and reduce it down to large pixels of colour. As you can see from the comparison above, whilst the fine edges and details have been removed, you can still gage the character of the area. The structures of the buildings are still obvious and the variety of shades of green in between, indicate the leafy, rural character of this residential area. It is interesting that the tarmac is such a recognisable colour and I immediately associate it with being a man-made environment.

I repeated the process with a range of different images. The photo above shows a very different area, taken in Tam Coc, Vietnam. The colouring in this pixelated image, gives some inferences as to the character of the area. The large grey mass (the rocky hill) indicates that this area is situated in a natural, remote setting. The shape of the rock, remains clear which again indicates that it is a natural material in its natural form. The red of the building and bridge in the pixelated image are striking and perhaps align with the unique, local vernacular. The almost exact match in colour between the hill and the stone hand creates a cohesive and therefore, calming environment and also suggests that local building materials were used.

The above image, unlike the others, is a completely natural landscape. Even in the pixelated image, it is very obvious that this is a beach scene. The picture, although only really consists of 3 main colours evokes feelings of calm as it is recognisable as a seascape.
